Range, Battery, Powertrain – TATA PUNCH EV

Tata has introduced the new acti.ev architecture for the Punch, but specific technical details of the Punch EV remain undisclosed. The Punch EV is offered in two versions – Standard and Long Range – with anticipated 25kWh and 35kWh battery packs, respectively. The Standard variant is equipped with a 3.3kW AC charger, while the Long Range variant comes with an additional 7.2kW AC charger and supports DC fast charging. The modular platform is designed to provide a range spanning from 300km to 600km, depending on the model and battery capacity. For the Punch EV, an estimated range of 300km to 400km is considered reasonable. Although details on power and torque figures are awaited, it is known to feature multi-mode brake regeneration.

This marks our initial detailed glimpse of the Punch EV, and it’s evident that the updated grille and bumper design closely resemble the new Nexon EV. Essentially, it appears as a scaled-down version of the Nexon EV. The front showcases a full-width light bar on the bonnet, accompanied by a split headlamp setup, where the primary headlamp cluster bears a striking resemblance to the Nexon EV. Notably, this electric SUV is the inaugural Tata EV to incorporate a charging socket at the front. The revamped lower bumper features fresh vertical slats on the plastic cladding and a faux silver skid plate.

Moving to the rear, the Punch EV exhibits a Y-shaped brake light configuration, a roof-mounted spoiler, and a dual-tone bumper design. Noteworthy updates include a new set of 16-inch alloys with disc brakes on all four wheels, a departure from the internal combustion engine (ICE) Punch that employs a drum setup at the rear. The Punch EV also stands out as the first Tata EV to showcase a front trunk (frunk).

Interior and Features: The Punch EV boasts a layered dashboard design, featuring a standout 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The vehicle also introduces a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a two-spoke steering wheel illuminated from larger Tata SUVs. For lower variants, a 7.0-inch infotainment screen and digital cluster are provided. The jewelled rotary drive selector from the Nexon EV will exclusively be offered in the Long Range variants.

Apart from the mentioned features, the high-end Punch EV model will incorporate a 360-degree camera, leatherette seats, electronic parking brake with auto hold, connected car technology, a wireless charger, ventilated front seats, cruise control, and the new Arcade.ev app suite. Optionally, a sunroof is available. Several of these features mark a first for a vehicle of this size. In terms of safety, the Punch EV includes six airbags, standard ABS and ESC, a blind-view monitor, three-point seat belts for all seats, ISOFIX mounts, and an SOS function.

It is anticipated that the Tata Punch EV will be available for purchase in January 2024, with an expected starting price of Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom). The Citroen eC3 stands as its sole direct rival, while it also serves as a more premium option compared to the MG Comet EV and Tata Tiago EV.
